Things to remember

  • Drink lots of water after every session, and especially if you haven’t had a treatment for a while. Massage helps naturally release toxins from soft tissue. Drinking water will help your body flush these toxins through urine, rather than through the skin for example. If you tend to feel tired or drained after a massage also make sure you drink lots of water to help revitalise the body.
  • Wear comfy stretchy clothes if possible. This will make it easier to assess your joint mobility and you will also feel more comfortable after the session once you are feeling relaxed.
  • Don’t hesitate to share information and insights, and ask questions. The session is all about you! Take an active part in your health and wellbeing. My commitment to you is to do my absolute best to help you achieve your goals!

Side effects - what could possibly go wrong...

Compared with other modalities, massage treatments are relatively safe and there's not a lot that can go wrong, as long as you are treated by a qualified practitioner.

Please be aware of the following possible side effects:
  • Pain: Tell your practitioner if you are sensitive to pain, if the level of pressure is excessive or if you become uncomfortable during the session. Your tolerance to pain will vary over time and depends on your overall health and stress levels. You will be able to tell the difference between “good pain”, which comes with a sense of relief, and “bad pain”, which is a sign of tissue damage. It is also not unusual to feel tender or bruised in certain areas for up to 48 hours after a session.
  • Bruising: Tell your practitioner if you bruise easily or have a bleeding disorder. Some areas bruise easier than others. It is possible that bruises appear after a session. Cupping may also leave marks that are usually painless but can remain visible up to 2 weeks after a session.  You may also feel tender after treatment – this is not uncommon and may last for a couple of days.
  • Sleepiness: It is common to feel relaxed or sleepy after treatment so avoid getting up quickly from the massage table. Give yourself time to adjust after treatment before driving or using stairs. Keep well hydrated with water.
  • Light-headedness: Do not skip a meal before treatment. Get up slowly from the treatment table. Drink lots of water.
  • Aggravation of your condition: Although uncommon, it is possible that your symptoms worsen after treatment. Keep your practitioner informed of any improvement or worsening, this will provide valuable information regarding how you respond to treatment.
